Cool Uses For TurboView

TurboView can be used for so many different purposes other than just simple file viewing. Below is a list of neat things that TurboView can do for you that other viewing programs normally don't do.

What do you want to do Today?  :)

Here are some examples of what people could use TurboView for. These are just examples to give you an idea of the types of things you can do with it other than just viewing pictures :)

WEB PAGE CREATION WIZARD
In order to bring up this Web Wizard, you can click on the "Web Pages (Creates Thumbnailed Pages For Pics)" menu from the FILE pulldown menu. Or you can click on the ICON BUTTON which looks like a yellow folder with a blue "e" on top of it.

OVERVIEW:
If you have ever built a Web Page, you know that some programs are eaier to use than others and when it comes down to it, there are quite a few good ones. The only problem is this, if you are making a Web Site of pictures, it becomes a BIG PAIN to make them.

For example: Let's say you went to Paris and wanted to put up on the Web, your vacation pics. Or let's say you have a new baby and you want everyone to see the new baby. It's a great way to communicate with long distance friends and family. The problem with making these types of Web Pages is that once you have more than 4 or 5 pics to put into the Web site, it becomes a time-consuming process. First you have to make thumbnails of all your images. Good luck finding a GOOD program to do that. BUT, even if you have one, the next step is to INSERT each pic into your HTML code and to assign a link to the ACTUAL full sized image. Now that's a LOT of typing.

With TurboView, all you have to do is to copy all the files into a seperate folder and then type in a TITLE and DESCRIPTION and set the colors & text size the way you want it, then click a button and POOF, it's all done for you. All the thumbnails are created and all the HTML file(s) are created for you. You can even tell how many pics per page. As an example: TurboView can create a Web Site with 250 pics in about 64 seconds on a 450MHZ machine. Now THAT'S SMART!!!

HINT:
You may decide later that you don't want to use a folder as a Web Folder anymore. IE: You want to clean up your folder so that any modifications to it are reversed so that it looks JUST LIKE IT LOOKED BEFORE you turned it into a Web Folder. Well, that's pretty simple. You can choose either method.

1. Go to the Web Folder and manually DELETE the 2 subfolders called "WEBPAGES" and "WEBTHUMBS". These are sub-folders created by this Web Wizard.
2. Click on FILE/CLEAN UP WEB FOLDER,          This menu option will basically do the above operation for you quickly.

NOTE:
Web Wizard function of TurboView has a lot of customization that you can do to make your Web Site look the way you want it. We make NO BONES about this fact, you CAN find better HTML(WEB) code editors everywhere. This Wizard is NOT meant to be the END-ALL product. If you just want simple stuff, then you can use it without modifications. If you want cool/fancy stuff on your page you will have to edit the page(s) to your liking AFTER all the thumbnails & html file(s) are created. So, if you wanted to add page framing and lots of animated stuff, just do the normal steps in the Wizard and when you are done, just EDIT the HTML file(s) that are output. Fancy it up and then you are done. But for most people the Wizard will probably be all you need. If you have a LOT of pages output and want to modify each one to look the same way, but fancier than the normal standard output, then it could take some time to do the editing:)  In this case, use our TEMPLATE mode. This solves your problem of wanting to make the pages look fancier than we provide AND at the same time making the pages super fast!!

FEATURES:
Now that you understand a little of what the program CAN and CAN'T do for you. We will  describe all the features you CAN tweak and play with.

HOME PAGE HTML NAME:
Every Web Server that could host your site needs the main page of your site to be a SPECIFIC filename. There are 2 standards out there. You can select which naming convention to use, either "default.htm" or "index.html". This should satify 95% of the Web Servers out there!

THUMBNAILS IN WEB PAGE:
The next thing you can customize are the size of the thumbnails in the Web Page(s). You can go from really small 32x32 to really big 300x300. A nice size to start with is between 75 and 150. If you have only a few pics, I like to use 150 or 175.

You can also select the MAXIMUM number of pics that can appear on each Web Page for the site. So if you select 10 and you had 100 pictures in the Web Folder, then it would create 10 Web Pages for you.

SCREEN PROPERTIES:
You can select what color to use for the overall text background color.

You can also (optionally) select a file to use as your background image. Typically, these are small GIF files, that get TILED onto your page so that the background color you selected is never used. The background is instead an image.

You can also (optionally) select a file to use as your Main Picture. This image is placed very near the TOP of the page. It's purpose is to indicate what types of pics are on the page. Usually you would pick a picture that is in the Web Folder. So if you had 10 baby pictures in the folder, you might pick BABY_002.JPG as your Main Picture Image. Again, if the file you select is NOT a GIF or JPG file, then the file will be converted to a GIF or JPG file for you automatically. The original file is NOT altered or moved.

LINK PROPERTIES:
Another thing you can do is to select the colors to use for the visible links on your page. There are 2 colors to select. One color is used to display links that have NOT been visited yet. And the other color is for links that have ALREADY been visited.

TITLE:
You can of course give the Web Page a TITLE that would appear at the very top of the page. And you can assign it a size and color. You can also pick if you want it BOLD, UNDERLINED or ITALIC.

PAGE NUMBERS:
The page numbers are generated automatically by the program and are placed underneath the title. You can select the color & size etc... of the pages numbers.

DESCRIPTION:
You can enter a short or long description about the page. You can also break it up into several paragraphs by pressing return a couple of times at the end of a line. As with the TITLE, you can assign the same types of properties like color, size etc...

FUNCTIONS AFTER CUSTOMIZATION

Once you have customized it the way you want it to look, there are several things you can do from that point. Keep in mind that after EVERY CHANGE you make to colors & size etc... The preview window will update itself to reflect the changes you just made. The ONE EXCEPTION is for the text fields. So, if you change the TITLE or the DESCRIPTION, you NEED to click on the "Update Preview" button to get the preview to update itself.

UPDATE PREVIEW:
This rebuilds the preview window so reflect any changes you have made. It takes about 1/2 second to finish.
If you click anywhere in the preview window panel, it opens up a LARGE, FULL SIZED preview window for you to scroll up & down in so that you can see pretty much exactly what the pages WOULD look like.

MAKE WEB PAGES:
Typically once you are done customizing, you would click the "Make Web Page(s)" button. This does the actual work of creating all the thumbnail files and the HTML files. It builds them pretty fast. Again, these files are also stored in the Web Folder that you selected in sub-folders called "webpages" and "webthumbs". That way, once it's done, all you have to do is to UPLOAD/FTP all the files onto your Web Site's Web server. If you are working on a Web Folder that has a ton of pictures, the process COULD take a little while. So, as you see the progress is taking too long, you can click on "Stop Creating" button. This finishes up the current page and will not process any further pending pages that NEED to be created. But at least you can break out of it if you want to.

PullDown Menus for MAKE WEB PAGES:

First PAGE ONLY:
This is VERY USEFUL, if you are working on a LARGE Web Folder with a lot of files and you make a few customization changes and you want to see what the ACTUAL HTML WEB page looks like and you don't want to wait until ALL pages are done. By choosing this option, only the FIRST page gets created.

Make All Page(s):
This is the same as just clicking on the main part of the button. It makes all the pages for the Web Folder.

VIEW WEB PAGES:
Once you have MADE all the Web Pages for the Web Folder, you can now view it in your Internet Browser. By clicking this button, it brings up your default Web browser with the main page that it just got finished creating. This way you can see it EXACTLY 100% as an end user would see it on the Internet. The viewing of course is on your local HARD drives. At this point you have not PUBLISHED(transferred) the files to the Internet.

PullDown Menus for VIEW WEB PAGES:

View In Default Browser:
This is the same as just clicking the button. It opens up the first page into your default Internet Browser. This way, you can see how it would look like to others on the Internet if they were to view your Web Site.

View With ???????.???:
This allows you to view the Web pages in a DIFFERENT browser than your default browser. Let's say you use MS Internet Explorer as your default browser for the INTERNET and for some reason, you wanted to use NetScape for your viewer. You could select NetScape as your ALTERNATE browser and then the "????????.???" would be "Netscape.exe". In order to setup your alternate stuff, click on the OPTIONS menu and then the rest is obvious.

EDIT 1ST WEB PAGE:
Once you have MADE all the Web Pages for the Web Folder, and you have viewed it and you want to make a few FANCY changes, then you can bring up the page into your favorite Web Page Editor. As a matter of fact, you can setup up to 3 editors and then pick from the one you want to edit with. Of course, if you just click on this button, the default editor will come up with your page in it.

PullDown Menus for EDIT 1ST WEB PAGE:

Edit With ????????.???:
There are 3 entries that look LIKE this. Basically, all you do is pick which editor you want to use. Each of these menu items contains the programs ICON and filename, so it should be EASY for you to know which editor to use.

PUBLISH PAGES:
Once you have MADE all the Web Pages for the Web Folder, and you have viewed it and edited them to your liking, then you are ready to PUBLISH the files to your web site on the Internet. There are several groups of files you need to upload.

1. Your picture files that are in your Web Folder.
2. Your HTML files you created with the MAKE WEB PAGES button.
3. Your thumbnail files you created with the MAKE WEB PAGES button.

If you just click on the PUBLISH button, then ALL of the above files will be put into the FILES-TO-UPLOAD list for the Web Publish Window.

So, with this in mind there are several pulldowns on the PUBLISH button. They allow for more effiecient use of your time.

PullDown Menus for PUBLISH PAGES:

Upload All Files:
This is the same as just clicking on the PUBLISH button. If you have a lot of pics and thumbnails and HTMLs, then this process could take some time. Of course if you are creating a NEW Web Site, then you will have to spend the time to upload ALL files to the Web.

Upload Pictures Only:
Let's say you already uploaded your Web Folder to your Web site on the Internet and you changed(edited) a bunch of pictures and you need to put the pictures on the Web Site. Then this is the button for you. Of course this is only good if you didn't add or subtract from the files that are currently in the Web Site.

Upload HTMLS and Thumbnails Only:
Let's say you already uploaded your Web Folder to your Web site on the Internet and you changed the layout of the Web Site. You may have changed the number of pics per page. Or you may have changed the colors or text size etc... You may have changed the SIZE of the thumbnails too. The point is, you changed HOW the pages look, BUT the ACTUAL images for the pages are the SAME AS BEFORE. In this case, it's stupid to waste time RE-UPLOADING the old pics again. So, just upload the HTMLS and THUMBNAILS to save you time.

Upload HTML Files Only:
Let's say you already uploaded your Web Folder to your Web site on the Internet and you changed the layout of the Web Site. As long as the ONLY thing you change is the text & colors and text sizes, then all you need to do is to upload the HTML files created. In this case, it's stupid to waste time RE-UPLOADING the old pics or thumbnails again. So, just upload the HTMLS to save you time.

Upload NEEDED Files Only:
Let's say you are uploading to your Web Site and you CANCEL out before all the files are published (uploaded). Maybe you had to logoff and go to work and for whatever reason. Using this option makes IT REAL EASY to continue from where you left off. It AUTOMATICALLY KNOWS to skip uploading files that are already on the Web Site Server.

TEMPLATE MODE:

Template mode is GREAT if you want pages that are FANCIER than those produced by the simple Web Wizard options. If you are just making a SINGLE page, then it's probably faster to just EDIT that page in a WEB PAGE HTML EDITOR and once you are done, just upload the stuff. HOWEVER, IF you are creating a web site that has MANY pages in it, then it would be a major pain to edit ALL of the generated pages to suit your fancy. In this case you can speed up the process by using the TEMPLATE mode.

So, simply design the Web Page to the way you pretty much want it to look like using the simple options on the Web Wizard screen. THEN, click the "Use Template Mode" checkbox. Then click the "MAKE TEMPLATE HTML" to create the Template.HTML file. This file is called "WP_TEMPLATE.HTML" and is stored in a sub-folder called "webpages" in your Web Folder. You can then edit the template file so that your page(s) will look JUST THE WAY YOU WANT THEM TO. Then click on "Make Pages" and then POOF, they are all generated to look just like the template you made. Then go ahead and view them and then PUBLISH them. Simple as that!

ALTERNATE BROWSERS and WEB PAGE EDITORS:

In order to setup your alternate stuff (Viewers/Editors), click on the OPTIONS menu and then pick "Assign Alternate Browsers / Editors". Then a new window comes up and you can easily pick an alternate Viewer and up to 3 alternate Editors. The browse button allows you to look on your drives for the correct .EXE program file that you want to use.

HINT:
When TRYING to find programs etc... to assign alternates, novices may get frustrated because they may not know where they have stored their own programs. So, there is a different way to assign a new program name. If you have a shortcut on your DeskTop you can drag from that ICON right into the field that accepts filenames. In fact you can drag items from your START or START/PROGRAMS menus. Each alternate assignment has 2 fields. The longer one is the filename field. The shorter one is for optional command line parameters you may want to pass. In actuality, you will probably never use the optional field.

GENERAL INFO:

From the FILE menu, you can SAVE your work for your Web Folder. All the customization settings stuff you have is saved to a file in the Web Folder. The file is called WEBINFO.INI. This is so that the next time you go back into that web folder, it comes up like the last time you left it.

From the FILE menu, you can also choose to work with a DIFFERENT Web Folder for those of you who may have many.

WHAT'S A WEB FOLDER?
From the FILE menu, you can also select to go to a different Web Folder to work on. You can have as many Web Folders as you want. There is nothing special about a web folder. All it is, is a folder that has a bunch of pictures in it that you put there. And that Web Folder gets a bunch MORE files stored to it by using the "Make Web Page(s)" button. All the thumbnails and HTMLs are stored there as well.

FILES CREATED BY WEB WIZARD:
Web Wizard will create a bunch of files in the process of creating Web Pages. You ORIGINAL pics in the Web Folder are NOT ALTERED or MOVED. However 2 sub-folders ARE created.

1. webpages
2. webthumbs

The webpages subfolder is used to store the HTMLs created and the TEMPLATE HTML and any images or fancy mailbox's that you may reference in your HTML files. The webthumbs subfolder is used to store the thumbnail files that are generated.

Please keep in mind that if you use the TEMPLATE mode and use your own HTML editor, that ANY REFERENCE to images that you put into your page to fancy it up, like mailboxes etc..., HAVE TO BE in the webpages folder which is a sub-folder of your Web Folder.

NOTE:
All of your picture files are NOT altered or MOVED in any way. The Web Wizard will NOT MOVE or MODIFY any of your picture files at all.

FTP WEB PUBLISHING WINDOW

This window can be used to transfer files to and from the Internet. FTP is the common way of moving files. So, for example, you could log into ftp.netscape.com and then log in as anonymous for USERNAME and use your email address for your password and then you can browse around on Netscape's system and see what you might want to download.  You can also use this window for PUBLISHING your Web Folder files from the Web Wizard.

BASIC CONCEPTS:
Most FTP programs log into a remote computer on the Internet. They then can be used to upload or download files. Uploading means copying files FROM YOUR COMPUTER to the remote computer. Downloading means copying files FROM THE REMOTE computer to your local computer. In the settings tab you can change any of the settings to log into the server.

PROXY/FIREWALL:
There are some proxy settings to if you need to use them. Also, there is an option to use PASV mode. Some firewall/proxy setups require the use of PASV instead of normal. In PASV mode, your PC makes the requests for the data connect INSTEAD of the FTP Site making the request. If you are on a network and access the Internet via your network instead of a modem or cable, talk to you network administrator about what proxy settings to use.

HINT: You need to be LOGGED into the Internet BEFORE ATTEMPTING to use this FTP function.

HOME FOLDER:
When you log into your ftp server, a default directory is brought up. Every system is different. And sometimes you have to open up other folders further on down the tree in order to access you HOME FOLDER. The HOME FOLDER is the folder on the server in which you need to store files so that people on the Internet can view your web pages.

Accessing FTP Publishing From Web Wizard

If you load the FTP Publishing window from the Web Wizard, it's basic purpose in life is to upload the files from the Web Folder to your Internet web site. In order to do that you need to specify your web server name. Your username and your password. You need to contact your ISP to get the information for what sever name to use. Once the ftp server name and username and password fields are entered, you are ready to rock & roll.

The last field to enter is the "FTP Folder".  You need to plan ahead how you want to store your Web Folders onto your Internet site. For example: If your default directory/folder after logging into the FTP Server is your "HOME FOLDER", then you can specify the following for the FTP Folder:

webfolders/foldername

By using this technique, you can keep all your Web Folder pages in unique folders on your Web Site. Of course you can pick whatever name you want and make sure you remember it. Let's say your "HOME FOLDER" is "public_html/username", then you can specify the following for the FTP Folder:

public_html/username/webfolders/foldername

Of course you would replace username with your log in username.
Now, if you have already entered the appropriate info, then the next time you use the PUBLISH function, you will be brought to the PUBLISH Tab of the FTP Publishing Window. In this tab, you can click on the "Upload Files" button to transfer files from YOUR PC to the Internet. It will transfer all the files in the "Files To Upload List". You can of course abort the upload process if you want to go on and do something else. If you want to change some of the user settings BEFORE uploading, just click on the SETTINGS Tab and change what you want. You can even go to the FTP Web Tools tab to look at what's on your web site.

Accessing FTP Publishing From Menu or Button

When you bring up the FTP Publishing window using this method, you can basically use it to log into whatever servers you want to and to upload or download whatever files you want to. Just go to the SETTINGS tab and pick the server to use and use the appropriate usernames and passwords.

HINT:
If you are logging into a server that is NOT from your ISP, then these are called public logins. A public login uses a username of "anonymous" and a password of "email@address" just put your email address in that field.

The settings TAB also allows you to ADD or DELETE entries from the list of FTP sites that youu want to keep track of. Each FTP Site entry allows the normal stuff like Friendly name that you remember the site by, and username and password, description etc... Here is a list of the fields that may NOT be obvious to you.

ATTEMPTS/RETRY-DELAY
Let's say you are going to a site that's very busy most of the time. If you were to try to login, then it's probable that you won't be able to because there are TOO MANY users currently logged into that site. So, for these hard to get into sites, you can use ATTEMPTS and RETRY DELAY to you advantage. Set ATTEMPTS to like 20 and then when it finds that it can't connect right away, it will try to connect many more times, based on the ATTEMPTS field. You can also tell it to pause a few seconds between each login attempt, or you can make it pause many seconds. A good number would be 3 seconds.

STARTING FOLDER:
This is handy for specifying where to start once you are logged into the system. For example: Let's say you log into ftp.microsoft.com a lot and you navigate about 4 or 5 levels of folders deep to finally get to the folder you are interested in. Well, this is sorta kinda a pain in the you know what. So by specifying a starting folder, you can effectively start where you want to be and saves you time. For example:   /pub/tools/win95/graphics

PROXY PORT/PROXY SERVER
If you are using a proxy, then you may have to utilize these features by checking the USE PROXY check box. Then set the PROXY SERVER to the correct servername of the proxy machine. And also specify the correct PROXY PORT value. Talk to your system administrator for these values if you are unsure.

PASV MODE/FIREWALL
A lot of times if you are behind a firewall, you will not be able to have other FTP sites connect with you to transfer data. If you have problems connecting and all the other settings are correct, try CHECKING the PASV MODE check box. This forces YOUR computer to be the one to initiate the data connection. This is what a lot of firewalls want. They don't want the outside would initiating the data transfer.

Once you have your settings proper, then go to the FTP WEB TOOLS TAB and click CONNECT and then start browsing the FTP site and do what you want to do.

FTP Web Tools TAB

In this tab, you can browse your web site. You can add, delete and rename folders on your site. You can of course upload & download files too. If you DOUBLE-CLICK on a file in the file list displayed, it will VIEW or PLAY or RUN the file you selected. You can of course abort the upload or download that is in progress. You can delete and rename files too. If you DOUBLE-CLICK on a folder in the Files List, it switches into that folder. You can also click on folders in the Tree View to switch to different folders.

Whenever you download, the download window stays open after the download completes. Then from the download window, you can open the file you just downloaded. You can also THROTTLE or control the speed of the downloads too so that you can manipulate which downloads finish quicker. If you want the download windows to close as they are done downloading, then check the "Automatically close Download-Window(s)". Also, let's say you want to download many files at the same time, you can choose to download up to 30 files at the same time. Normally, just one at a time is fine, BUT let's say you are downloading from a site that has SLOW speeds. In fact let's say they are so slow that you are only able to download at 1K per second. Well, if you download 5 files at a time, AND EACH ONE is downloading at 1K per second, then you will be able to complete all the downloads MUCH FASTER!

When ever you unload, you will get the same download window as described above, except that you  are SENDING files instead of GETTING files.

Speed Chart

When you are uploading or downloading you will see a green bar chart on the rightside of the window. This indicates relative speed of transfer. So if the transfer is going slow, the green bars will be shorter. Every 3-5 seconds a new green bar is put at the top and the rest of the chart slides down one notch. Since it can display about 75 notches worth, that's about 3 to 4 minutes worth. Then it will appear that the notches made the longest ago seem to fall off the chart. This way on long downloads that may take hours, you get to see the last 4 minutes of activity. If you want to see the ENTIRE sessions worth of notches, just click on the chart. It will then shrink the chart so it will fit the entire activity report there. It's a nice visual, especially since just with a simple glance, you can see if the transfer is still going at a good rate.

When ever you select to upload or download files, if there is enough system resources, the download/upload window will pop up and starts the transfer. If you are LOW on system resources (10%) then a warning will pop-up telling you that you need to close some programs out before the download windows can be opened.

HINT: If you select 100 files to download and you only selected to download 5 at a time, there will be many transfer stacked up in a queue "waiting" to be downloaded. You can check the status of the queue by looking at the status bar on the bottom. It will tell you how many transfers are pending.

TIP: If you have files transfering, you can NOT close out the FTP Window. You have to wait until all the transfers are either completed or cancelled!

ASCII VS. BINARY

You will see 3 buttons. An "A" and a "B" and a "?" next to each other. Only one can be selected at a time. The default is the "?" button. 99% of the time you will want to transfer files in binary mode. The ONLY time you don't want to is if you are transferring a TEXT file from a Unix based machine. So, the safest thing to do is to do everything in BINARY mode, except for plain TEXT files. Well, instead of forcing you to keep clicking on the buttons to select the correct transfer mode, we have the "?" button. This button is the best because it will AUTOMATICALLY select "Binary" mode when transfering files and will only switch into "ASCII" mode when it sees that the file extension is ".TXT" or ".RTF" or ".TEXT". This is a good default. If you want to, of course you can FORCE either binary or ASCII mode if you wish.

DRAG & DROP?

If you want to easily send a file or files, you can even DRAG files from your desktop or Explorer etc... right onto the FTP Window. You need to drop the file(s) onto either the right side with the Files List, OR you can drop onto the Left Pane with the TreeView. Just drop onto a folder name and then Poof, the upload starts. Pretty slick. Just make sure you don't drop onto a blank area of the Tree View because it will just ignore your request. Currently you can NOT DRAG FROM the Ftp window to your desktop or explorer, you need to click the DOWNLOAD Button and select a folder.

SOUNDS

There is a SPEAKER button you can click to turn off the sounds that are played whenever an FTP operation is completed.

WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT

There are several things you can do with TurboView to speed up Web Page development. First of all, as you are scrolling through the list of animated GIF files, once you see the one you want to use, just drag it from the TurboView window over to your Web Page application program. Works very slickly :)

As an extra added benefit, you can keep the animated GIFs in the Notes DataBase to help find what files you need. For example: You could find all GIFs that are animated email files. Then you could look at all of them quickly and then drag the one you want.

To see how to compare SEVERAL Animated GIF files all playing at the SAME time, click here.

You can do even better groupings using the Album Manager.

For additional info for Web Page creation, click here.

CATALOG PRODUCTION

You can produce catalogs of pictures. These catalog pages can be either printed to paper or saved as JPG or BMP files. You can select how many ROWS on each page of the catalogs and other cool options.

For additional info for Cataloging, click here.

REALTY USES

TurboView could be used to help Realtors manage what houses they are selling and what's available and the sold status. TurboView has 7 fields that can be used to store information. For example: You could use the NOTES field of the DataBase to store the description of the house. If the NUMBER1 field, you could store the price of the house. In the CATEGORY field you could put HOUSE and in the KEYWORDS field you could put BRICK, FIREPLACE, 3BR, GAS HEAT, etc... Then you could search on what you wanted. You could even use TurboView to scan the pictures of the houses into your computer.

FINDING MY DUPLICATES

As a collector of images, after awhile you end up with images you could swear you have seen before. So then you come up against the DUPLICATE syndrome. This is a common problem :) So, then the task is to locate the duplicates and keep the BEST picture and delete the other ones. So, the question becomes. "How do I find my duplicate files?". There are several ways that TurboView can do this for you. The first thing you need to do is to load the FILES LIST with all the files that you wish to be included in the search. You can do the DRIVE LOADING operations to accomplish this for you easily. Then go to the Files List Window and then click on the SEARCH button.

When using the functions that look for matching filenames, the files' extension is NOT used as part of the search. So, files like CAR001.JPG and CAR001.BMP would end up matching. The only search function that uses the file's extension when looking for matches is the "DUP FILESIZE & FILEDATE & FULLFILENAME" function.

WHAT DO I DO TO START THE SEARCH

The TOP panel is the search options area. Pick the search option you want. Then you can click on "SEARCH ALL" or "SEARCH HI-LITED". Then the files in the FILES LIST will be searched and the results will be placed into the SEARCH RESULTS PANEL. If you want the filenames that appear in the search results panel to become TAGGED in the FILES LIST, then check the "Tag Found Matches While Searching" checkbox BEFORE clicking on the SEARCH button.

If you are wanting to search for DUPLICATE IMAGES BY APPEARANCE, then check that checkbox. A whole new set of options will be displayed for that type of search. This is a very FAST way to locate images that are actually the SAME/CLOSE without reguard to what the actual filenames are. It LOOKS at the IMAGE itself. For complete instructions on "DUPLICATE IMAGES BY APPEARANCE" click here.

NOTE: There are a couple of custom options you can set before clicking the search button depending on which search option you have selected.:

ADVANCED: There is an advanced option that allows you to RESTRICT what folders are EXCLUDED<ignored> in the search. IE: You can set a list of folders whose files will NOT be searched if you check the "USE EXCLUSION LIST". If you want to edit the list click the "Edit Exclude List". After you have indicated all the folders you want to exclude from the search (like temp folders and Internet browsers' cache folders etc...) It may be that you WANT a particular folder INCLUDED EVEN though it's parent folder may be EXCLUDED. For example: Let's say you EXCLUDED:

C:\PICS\TEST

And let's further say that you specified that it's sub-folders should be ignored too. And let's further say that a particular folder SHOULD be allowed to be searched:

C:\PICS\TEST\NEWSTUFF

In this case you could add "C:\PICS\TEST\NEWSTUFF" to the INCLUDE list. The INCLUDE list OVERRIDES the effect of the EXCLUDE list entries. This usage is grreat for blanket ignores with minor exceptions.

WHAT COLUMN TO START SEARCH
Normally the searches on the filename include the whole filename starting with the first letter in the filename. This is the default and shoudn't be changed unless you have a specific need. Such as, let's say you have a bunch of vacation pictures whose filenames all start with "VAC_". Ex: VAC_001.JPG, VAC_002.JPG, VAC_PARIS001.JPG, VAC_BERLIN003.JPG
If you didn't want the first 4 letters to be used in the search because you know that they are all the same anyway, then you could set the "WHAT COLUMN TO START SEARCH" to column 5.

MINIMUM LETTERS THAT MUST MATCH
When search for PARTIAL filenames, then this sets the MINIMUM amount of letters that could match and then be displayed. The default of 3 is good and shouldn't be changed unless you want to keep the matches long. Then you could pick like 8 or higher. By picking 3, you allow matches of PAM, CAR, BAT, etc... If you had picked a minimum of 5 then the files of PAM001.JPG and PB_PAM_01.JPG and PENT_PAMC.JPG would NOT show up in the results window, because the common element of PAM in these particular filenames is only 3 letters long!

WHAT DO I DO AFTER I HAVE SEARCHED

After you have clicked on the SEARCH ALL or SEARCH HI-LITED button, the search results window will show all matches that were found in the current FILES LIST. At this point you can click the SAVE LIST button to save the results window to a text document file for later review or whatever. If you are wanting to review an old saved results list that you had saved earlier, you can use the LOAD LIST button.

If there are a bunch of results in the window you know are not important, you can HI-LITE these lines and then click the CUT LINES button and those lines will be removed from the results window. If you want to see if 2 files are IDENTICAL, then you can HI-LITE 2 files and then click the COMPARE 2 FILES button.

DELETE DUPLICATE FILE
If you decide to delete a file because it's a duplicate or just a file you don't want anymore, then you can click on the DELETE FILE button. Be careful, because after you delete it, you WON'T be able to get it back!

MOVE/RENAME FILE
You can hi-lite a file and then click to MOVE or RENAME the file for organizational purposes.

DISPLAY IMAGE IN ACTUAL SIZE
As you click on filenames in the results window, the actual picture is displayed in the preview panel. You can double click on the preview panel or on the filename itself and a LARGE PREVIEW window will be displayed. If you press ENTER/RETURN in the search results window on a file, the LARGE PREVIEW is also displayed. If the displayed file is an ANIMATED GIF file then you can click on the CAMERA button to play the animation.

COMPARING 2 DUPLICATE FILES
After seeing that you have a couple of files that may be duplicates of each other, it would be advisable to open them up into a LARGE PREVIEW window so that you can compare them better. To see about LARGE PREVIEW windows, click here. Better yet, there is a button you can click to COMPARE to HI-LITED files to see if in fact they are identical.

FIND BUTTON
You can use the FIND button to search the results list like you would in a word processor. You can find certain text strings that you are interested in locating. You can also press CTRL-F or F3 to start the find operation.

SO YOU FOUND A LOT OF MATCHES :)

If you noticed that there are a lot of matches in the results list and that you smacked yourself in the head because you KNEW that a bunch of these were dups to begin with, then you might consider using the "EXCLUDE LIST". This sets up a list of folders to NOT search. So when seaching the files in the Files List if it finds that a file was in an excluded folder, then it is not part of the search process.

NOTE: If you had searched for "Duplicate Images By Appearance" and you notice that you have LONG lists of matches that don't even appear to be close it could be caused by what is called MATCHING BLEEDING. This usually only occurs when comparing thousands of files at a time. There is not a lot you can do about this, but I can describe situations that can cause matching bleeding. Let's say you have two images. One of Michael Jackson and one of Dianna Ross. And let's say you created a MORPHING sequence of 20 images, in which image one looks like MJ and the 20th image looks like DR. And the images in between are various stages of transforming MJ to DR. Well in this situation pic 1 looks VERY close to pic 2 and pic2 looks very close to pic 3. BUT, Pic 1 doesn't look ANYTHING AT ALL like pic 20. Actually in THIS case they probably could :) The results list would show all 20 pics in the same main matching group. When there are more than 10 pics in a group we break the group up into smaller pieces so as to produce better smaller lists for you to review. The smaller groups have an indicator as to what main group it WAS ORIGINALLY part of.

NOTE: You can of course DRAG from the preview window to whereever you want to.

SEARCH FOR DUP FILESIZE & FILEDATE

Sometimes you may copy files to temp folders and then rename the files for testing purposes. The sad thing is, that later on, you FORGOT that you had done this and now you have files on your system you don't need anymore and you aren't sure which ones to delete. And since these file had been renamed, you can't use a filename finding technique to find you duplicate files. So, TurboView has the ability to search for DUPS by file size & date. This gives you a list of files that match on SIZE & DATE. You can then elect to TAG these files so that later on you could sort the FILES LIST by tagged files. Then all the tagged files would be together and you could then go through those files quickly to see which of those files are in fact duplicates. You can use the LARGE PREVIEWS to help you out with this process.

SEARCH FOR DUP FILESIZE & FILEDATE & FILENAME

This is just like the search feature for DUP FILESIZE & FILEDATE. The only difference is that it's possible that you can have files of the same size & date and the files STILL be different. By throwing in the full filename into the mix, now the search results are more likely to actually show duplicate files. Because it would be RARE for files of the same size/date/name to be different files. There is a COMPARE 2 FILES button you can click to ensure that the files are really the same.
NOTE:The FILENAME here is the FULLFILENAME and that means that the file's extension is looked at when looking for matching files.

SEARCH FOR DUP WHOLE FILENAME

Sometimes you may copy files to other folders and then later forget that you had done this. These files are then wasting disk space. This option allows you to search by duplicate filenames. So, if you had copied some files around, this option will catch it and display all files that have the same name. The file extensions are ignored. Please keep in mind to load the FILES LIST with all files you want to search through. Since the file extension is ignored for the search, it's great for finding files that you converted to a different graphic format and forgot to delete the original file. For example: C:\PICS\PAM001.JPG would match with C:\NEWSTUFF\OCT98\PAM001.GIF in the search results window.

SEARCH FOR DUP PARTIAL FILENAME

Let's pretend you have a lot of pictures of Pamela Anderson and the filenames are all varied. For example:  PAM__1.JPG, Pamela_A_001.jpg, PB_Pam_Ander_0189.bmp, PENT_Pam_Anderson_001.gif. As you can see, you couldn't just search by filename because the filenames are not the same. So using this option, you can tell TurboView that you want to search by partial name. TurboView will then look through all of the files in the FILES LIST and build a 3 letter table of unique entries. In this example it would put the following into the table:  PAM, AM_, M__, __1, AME, MEL, ELA, LA_, A_A, _A_, A_0, _00, 001, PB_, B_P, _PA, M_A, _AN, AND, NDE, DER, ER_, R_0, _01, 018, 189, PEN, ENT, NT_, T_P, ERS, RSO, SON, ON_, N_0.

As you can see this list comprises all of the 3 letter pairings that exist from all the filenames This list is then searched for duplicates. It would find PAM in all 4 files. It would also find 001 in 2 of the files. It would also find ANDER in 2 of the files. After doing the 3 letter pairings, it then goes on to 4 letter pairings and then 5 and so on until no pairings are left. For each pairing that has duplicates, the matches are put into a list.

SEARCH FOR DUP PARTIAL GIVEN FILENAME

If you know what you are looking for then you can use this option because it's faster. For example you could type in PAM and it would find all files in the files list that contain PAM somewhere in the filename.

SEARCH FOR DUP GIVEN FILENAME

If you want to search for duplicates on a given filename, then just type in the filename that you want to look for. Any matches will be displayed.

SEARCH DUPLICATE IMAGES BY APPEARANCE

This is a very powerful method for finding which files actually LOOK like other files in your Files List. Just click on the "Find Duplicate Images By Appearance" checkbox. You can select various options that determine HOW & WHAT to search.

HOW CLOSE TO MATCH

EXACT MATCH: This means that the results list will contain file matches that are basically identical to each other. If you had saved an image under a different graphic file type and forgot about it, this will find the pair.
CLOSE MATCH (Best): This means that the images don't have to be exact, but instead just CLOSE in order to make an entry in the results list. I like this option the best. Even minor editing changes to an image can still be found to match. This finds MORE matches than the EXACT method.
LOOSE MATCH: This allows images that are vaguely resembling to have a match occur. This may produce a results list that is rather large if you have a lot of files in the files list that you are comparing :)

ALLOW B&W PHOTO APPEARANCE
This means that if you have two images that are the same but one is like a black & white photo and the other is in color, then THEY WILL MATCH when this option is turned on.

ALLOW SLIGHT BRIGHTNESS DIFFERENCES
This means that two images, that are the same except for one is slightly brighter or darker, will match.

ALLOW LARGE ASPECT DIFFERENCE
Normally the search is constrained so that image can only match if they are basically the same ASPECT ratio. This means that images that are TALL can only match against other images that are TALL.. Same goes for WIDE images. If you check this option, then the ASPECT is ignored. That means you could have 2 images that are basically the same except for the fact that you WIDENED one for fun. This option allows for those 2 images to match.

FORCE FINGERPRINT RE-GENERATION
You would probably NEVER use this option. I allow you to do it, if you suspect that the fingerprint database is somehow corrupted. This will rebuild the fingerprint database records for the files in the files list that you are comparing against. Fingerprints are generated ONCE for a file. So that a week later, if you compare a bunch of files that you had already compared, the fingerprints are read from the database. This saves a lot of time in the comparing process.

COMPARE TAGGED ONLY
Normally you would put all the files you want to compare against each other into the Files List. And then do the search. But let's say you have already searched you LARGE base of images, let's say 30,000. And let's say that you have cleaned up your system so that there are no more duplicates on your system that you don't want anymore. And let's further say that you have just downloaded about 100 files from the Internet. Well instead of comparing 30100 files against all 30100 file we can do a faster search. We could search 30000 for matches against the 100 new files we have downloaded :) He's what you do. Load up the Files List with all 30100 files and then TAG the 100 new files. Then check this option and the search will go faster, because it's only checking that the 100 files have no DUPS in the 30000 other files in the files list.

IGNORE IMAGES < 64x64
If you are searching for DUP images that are photos, typically they are bigger than 64x64. They are usually 320x200 or bigger. There is no sense in searching ALL images including small icons etc... SO by checking this option, you can speed up the searching process.

USE LEARNED MIS-MATCH LIST
After you do the search, the search results window contains all the matches that were found. As you review the results, you may find that there are a few matches that in fact are NOT MATCHES at all :(  This is sort of annoying. By using the fingerprint method I can search SUPER FAST. I can seach 30000 images in about 30 minutes. The only drawback is that some mis-matches may sneak in. I will NEVER MISS a correct match though :) So, I have what's called a MIS-MATCH list. This is a list of all matches that DO NOT REALLY MATCH. By checking this option, the results are refined so that any matches that WOULD have been reported are compared against the mis-match list. If it is determined that a match was not valid, it is NOT put into the results list. This makes the results list more valid. We suggest that you check this option and USE the mis-match list along with the LEARN button.

SORT BY QUALITY OF MATCHES
Normally the results window is created sequentially as matches are found. Check this option and the results will be sorted by QUALITY of match. SO the best matches will be at the top of the list and the worst ones at the end.

LEARN BUTTON

Once the results are completed, you can review it and then delete files you don't want anymore etc... If you see that there are matches that are NOT REALLY matches, then you can click on the 2 files and then click on the LEARN button. This adds the 2 files to the MIS-MATCH list. So if you checked "Use Learned MIS-MATCH List", these files will NOT appear as matching in the future searches. You can also hi-lite MORE than 2 files. You could hi-lite 3 files and then click learn. This means that NONE of the 3 files match against ANY of the other 3 files that are hi-lited. This is a faster way to add to the mis-match list than to click A&B then A&C then B&C. So one entry in the mis-match list can take the place of 3. The results list not only shows which images match with each other, but it ALSO shows which one matches with which. For ex:

        FILE 109=59   PAM001.JPG
        FILE 59=109   PAM001.GIF
        FILE 40=109   PAM002.BMP

Let's say that a match group has 3 entries in it. Even though they are all in the same matching group there are indicators that tell you even more info. This shows that file 109 best matches with file 59. And that file 59 matches best with file 109 and that file 40 best matches with 109. The file number displayed is where the file is currently positioned within the files list window.

HOW DO IT DO IT?

When you are searching for duplicate images by appearance, the process reads fingerprints from the fingerprint database and does it's comparing. If a file doesn't have a fingerprint yet in the database, then a fingerprint is generated for that file. This means that the FIRST TIME a file is compared it needs to have a fingerprint made. After that the fingerprint never needs to be made again. This also means that the first big search you do may take a little bit of time, then the second time & third time ect... it will be VERY VERY VERY FAST!!!!!

FIND ALL SOUND FILES AND PLAY THEM

You can change the ALLOWABLE FILE TYPES to just allow .WAV, .MID, .MIDI file types. Then use the DRIVE LOADING option to scan all of your drives for allowable file types. Then once that's done, your FILES LIST will contain all sound files that are on your system. You can then go to the Files List Window and then click on them to play them.

LESSONS AND TUTORIALS

TurboView has the ability to create lesson plans or tutorials as learning aids. Let's say you wanted to teach about the planets. You could have all of the planets stored as picture files. For example: MARS.JPG, VENUS.JPG, EARTH.JPG, JUPITER.JPG, etc... You would then create a .WAV sound file that talks about each planet. These sound files would be called: MARS.WAV, VENUS.WAV, EARTH.WAV, JUPITER.WAV, etc...

Then you could set the option in TurboView to play .WAV files by the same name. Then you could set the Slide Show option to PLAY ENTIRE WAV file before going to next picture. Then just start the slide show. Then it will show each picture and play the sound file associated with the picture :)

CONVERT BMP TO JPG FILES

If you wanted to convert all BMP files in a folder to JPG, then you would do the following.

1. You would load the files list with the BMP files you want to convert.
2. Go to the Files List Window
3. Tag all the files you want to convert
4. Click on the "Convert Tags To A New Graphics Format" tab button.
5. Click on the "Convert Options" button.
6. Select the JPG tab and the proper quality factor.
7. Click "Convert Now" button.
8. Watch all the files get converted!

You are now done! 2-EZ :)

REMOVING OR ADDING GIF COMMENTS

GIF files have the ability to have comments stored in them. These comments can be viewed by some GIF viewers. If you wish to REMOVE these comments from your GIF files, just load the GIF file in question. Then click on the "FILE/Save AS" option in the Main TurboView window. Then pick the GIF tab. Then click on the "COMMENTS" button. Then clear out any comments that may be in the comments window. Then save the file.

Likewise if you want to add comments, then after clicking on the "COMMENTS" button, you can type in any comments you may want to have for the file, then save the file.

SEARCHING FOR PARTICULAR FILE TYPE(S)

If you are curious as to how many files you have of a particular type, you can do this easily in TurboView. Just go to the "FILE/Allowable File Types For Dragging & Drive Loading" menu option. Then pick which file type(s) you want to search for. Then use the "FILE/Load Allowable File Types From Drive(s)" option. It is suggested that you use the "All Local Hard Drives" option so that all your hard drives are scanned. If you picked "Every Drive In System" then it would scan floppies and CD-ROMs and Network drives. So decide what you want to scan, then do it to it :)

SCREEN SNAP SHOTS

In order to create screen snap shots, just click on the "FILE/Snap Shots Functions/Snap Shot From Screen (Hidden)" option. Then TurboView will hide itself for a couple of seconds and then it takes a picture of your screen and then saves it to a file in your Windows TEMP folder. This file is also added to the current FILES LIST. They are named ~SCREEN1.BMP, ~SCREEN2.BMP, etc... depending on how many snap shots you take. These temp files are deleted when you exit TurboView. So make sure you move them to another folder for safe keeping.

HINT:
There is a speed button that looks like a CAMERA with it's FLASH going off on the main TurboView window. If you click this button, it will do the SnapShot fuinctions for you. This is quicker & easier than going thru the FILE MENU pulldown.

NOTE:
When you take a SnapShot, it asks you if you want to save the screen in one of 3 choices. You can pick, GIF or JPG or BMP. It also has a info window that tells you which method is best depending on what you want to do. Basically, if the screen is mostly simple program screen stuff (no photos or pics), then the best method is GIF. This keeps the filesize down to a minimum. If the screen has a lot of photographic stuff on it, then pick JPG because not only will it keep the size down, but the photos will still look VERY GOOD. And if you want a PERFECT representation with NO LOSS in quality, then pick BMP. Although BMP screen shots will be rather big. Like maybe 1.5MB each!

VIEWING IN THUMBNAIL STYLE

There are 3 main ways to look at the images in the FILES LIST.

1. Main Display Window
2. Files List Window (Preview Window)
3. Files List Window THUMBnail view mode.

The THUMBnail view mode is the way to go. Just load up the FILES LIST with whatever files you want by dragging or just loading files. Then go to the Files List Window. Then click on the THUMB View button. Poof, you will be happyfied. You can even change the size of the thumbnails.

NOTE: For further information on the Files List Window, click here.

ALBUM MANAGER
You can create Albums for related files. For example: You could take all your favorite pics from all your vacations and put them into an Album. This does NOT copy any files around. It merely keeps track of what filenames you want in the Album. You can have many Albums and sub-Albums for quick loading of files into the Files List. So, if a buddy comes over and you want to bring up your favorite vacation pics real quick you could do that with Albums in about 4 seconds flat.

You can also DRAG & DROP FROM anywhere TO anywhere. So, you could load up your ANIMATED MAILBOXES Album and then drag an image to your web development editor for quick web page design.

You can even LOCK an Album to a SPECIFIED folder on your drive. That way as you make changes to your folder, the Album will reflect the changes the next time you look at the Album. For complete description of Album Properties, click here.

SORTING
The list of files in each Album can be sorted by FileName or by Folder. Just click on the column header to sort by that column

DRAG & DROP

You can of course drag FROM just about anywhere to the Album manager. You can also drag from the Album manager TO just about anywhere. IE: You could drag/drop to/from Windows Explorer file manager, or the desktop, or a Image editing program, or a word processor, etc... When you drag TO the Album manager from something other than the Album's TREE or FILE LIST, then it is assumed that the operation will be a COPY operation. This is indicated by the "+" that floats along with the drag cursor. If you are draging from within the Album manager TO somewhere in the Album manager, then you have a choice of MOVE or COPY. If you hold down the SHIFT key while dragging, then it will know that you want to do a MOVE instead of a COPY. If you do a MOVE the drag cursor will NOT have the floating "+". IE: You might want to move files  from one Album to another.

NOTE:
If you set the "Allowable File Types For Dragging And Drive Loading" (from the Main Menu), to be restricted to just a few file types, this filter will be IGNORED while dragging from an Album to the Files List Window or the Main TurboView Window. IE: All files in the Album being dragged will go into the Files List.

RESOLVING BAD LINKS:

Let's say that you have an Album with a few files in it and you MOVE one of the files from your drive. The next time you bring up that Album it will pop-up a window that tells you that you have a bad reference<link> to a file. You are given the opportunity to resolve<fix> the bad link. IE: Maybe point somewhere else on the hard drive. Let's also say that you renamed a folder on your drive, then if you had an Album that contained a lot of files from that folder, then you would see a LOT of files pop-up with bad links. The Resolve Bad Link window is smart. Because after you fix the first file link, it checks to see if the only thing you changed was the path<foldername>. If so, then it updates ALL the other bad links that had the same bad path with the new good path :) That way only one path browse is required to fix a lot of bad links.

NOTE: You Albums can also have SUB-Albums in them.

TIPS: I save a lot of disk space by using Albums because I have Albums for Blondes, Bikinis, RedHeads, Celebreties etc.. And since a file in the Blondes could ALSO be in the BIKINIS Album, I am saving a LOT of disk space!!!! You could also create an Album called "CLIPART" and then create a few sub-Albums called "Sports", "Party", "Diploma", etc... and then group them. Then when you are doing desktop publishing you can bring the specific Album up and then drag the image you want directly into your word processor!!!

ALBUM PROFILES

Let's say that your computer is used by more than one person. It would be nice to allow each person to have their own Album groups. You can do this by telling TurboView WHERE to keep the Album Tree. Normally this is kept in the TurboView folder in a folder called "Albums_TurboView". You can however tell it to put the Albums Tree anywhere. For ex::

C:\MY DOCUMENTS\JACK
or
C:\MY DOCUMENTS\MARY

That way Mary could have her own Albums and Jack could also have his own Albums. Just click on the "Album Profile" button and select the correct folder and then the Album Manager does the rest :)

ALBUM DOCKING

You can have the Album Manager opened as a SEPERATE Window or you can attach the Album Tree to the Files List Window for easier operation of dragging & dropping or looking thru your Albums. You can dock the Tree to the TOP or BOTTOM of the Files List Window, you can even DOCK it to the RIGHT HAND SIDE for Taller Album Tree appearance. There is an option in the Main Menu for TurboView under the OPTIONS menu called "AUTO DOCK ALBUMS T FILES LIST WINDOW". By selecting this option you can turn ON/OFF the Auto docking of the Album Tree.

NOTE: You can make the DOCKED Album Tree wider or narrower by dragging on the BLUE vertical splitter bar on it's left edge. This might be handy if you want to un-cover the buttons on the right side of the Files List Window that might get covered up by the Album Tree.

ALBUM PROPERTIES

An Album is normally of type "NORMAL". These Albums will not produce copies of files. Files in the Albums are merely references to files that are on your drive. So as you move files from & to Albums, your actual files on your drives are not touched.

However, if you make an Album of type "FOLDER", then that means that the Album is LOCKED to an actual folder on your drive. So as changes are made to the folder on your drive, the Album will appear up-to-date. BE CAREFUL, because in this mode, the Album actually COPIES & DELETES FILES from your drives. So for example, let's say you have 2 Albums that are locked. If you drag files from one Album to the other, then files are actually COPIED to the destination Album and file are actually DELETED from the source Album. If you think about it, you will see that this makes sense. Also if you TAG a bunch of files from an Album that is locked, then select to DELETE those files from the Album, then those file will be DELETED FROM YOUR DRIVE as well!!!!  If you realize too late that you didn't want to delete those files, you can try to restore them with the TurboView Recycle Bin.

PUZZLE FUN

You can take any image being displayed on the main TurboView window and turn it into a PUZZLE for your enjoyment. Just click on the "Puzzle-Fun (Turn Image Into Puzzle)" from the main Menu. Once you are in the game window, you can pick from 1 of 3 games to play and each game has 3 levels of difficulty. Choose EASY to start with.

SLIDE-IT GAME

Slide-It is like the old hand held plastic games where one piece is missing and it starts out all jumbled up. And you task is to slide the pieces around until you have the pieces all in order. You can click on a piece to slide or you can use your ARROW KEYS to move the pieces.

NOTE: If you find yourself in a bit of a JAM, then you can use the SWAP button to sort of cheat a little. When you click on the SWAP button, it allows you to SWAP 2 pieces with each other. In order to indicate WHICH 2 to swap, just look at the BLANK piece and decide if the pieces to swap are ABOVE / BELOW / TO THE LEFT / TO THE RIGHT of the blank square. Then once you have decided, use the UP / DOWN / LEFT / RIGHT arrow keys to do the swap. The swap button takes away a few points from your final score.

HINT: If you are in a HUGE JAM, then you can use the CHEAT button to solve the puzzle for you right before your eyes. It's pretty cool looking. When you use the CHEAT option, it takes away a LOT of points from your final score.

JIGSAW-IT GAME

Jigsaw is an easier game to play. You get to see ALL of the pieces AND you get to pick WHICH 2 pieces to swap with each other. Just click on 2 pieces and they will swap. These games should be able to be solved in about 1 minute or so, unless you are mentally challenged, or can't use a mouse :)

GUESS-IT GAME

Guess it is also an easier game to play. It is a tad bit harder than JIGSAW it though. The concept is the same as Jigsaw, except all the pieces start out as BLACK. You click on a piece and then it becomes visible. Then click on where you think it belongs. If your choice was correct, then it will be swapped and both swapped pieces will be visible. If your choice was incorrect, then the pieces will remain BLACK. The object again is to get all the pieces in their proper spots.

GENERAL INFO

If you choose a move that is invalid, you will here sound file that says "INVALID MOVE". That's ok, just try again:)

You can RE-SIZE the window to make it bigger or smaller and all the pieces will automatically adjust themselves to fit within the new window size!

If you take a LONG TIME to finish a game, your score will become lower!

SHOW ORDER:

This helps you out by showing you the pieces ORIGINAL placement. So each piece has a location value. This value looks like [##,##] where ## are numbers. So, for example:

[2,3]

would mean that that piece needs to be place at ROW 2 and COLUMN 3. So by looking at all the pieces location numbers, you can figure out where they belong. You might say, well I can tell by the images on the panels. Well, that may be true, but WHAT IF some of the image pieces are BLACK :) So now you don't really know where EACH BLACK piece may HAVE to go in order to solve it. That is the purpose of this option, to help you out.

NOTE: This option takes away a few points from your final score!

JUMBLE:

This option takes the current screen pieces and JUMBLES them up so that you have to re-arrange them to get them in the proper order.

START GAME:

Once you have selected a game and a difficulty level, you can start the game.

ABORT GAME:

If you want to quit the current game and pick a new game, then abort the game.

EXIT:

This quits the Puzzle-Fun gaming window.

PASSWORD PROTECTING

There may be cases where others have access to your computer. And you may have sensitive files on your system that you DO NOT want others to see/play. These files may be raunchy or secret. Let's say you are working on a patent and don't want others to see your images of your new product. In this case you can password protect these files from prying eyes :)

PROTECTING:

The password protection built into TurboView is simple, yet effective. Just load up the images / movies / sound files that you want protected into TurboView's files list. Then go into the Files List Window. Then TAG all the files you want protected. Then select the "Password Protect / Un-Protect" tab option. Then select PROTECT. Then click DO ACTION.

At this point all of the files will be encrypted so that they will look like garbage to any program that tries to view / play it. In fact it may blow up some :) When I say blow up, I mean LOCKS-IT-UP. If you try to view it with a text editor it displays a message saying that it is a password protected file. In order to encrypt the files, there needs to be enough free space on the drive where the file is to be able to create the encrypted file. Usually this amount of free space is equal to the size of the file being encrypted. If you don't, you will get an error message indicating that the file couldn't be encrypted.

UN-PROTECTING:

You can easily UN-Protect the files you protected by going thru the same process as protecting and instead of picking PROTECT, just pick UN-PROTECT.

PASSWORD SETUP:

In order for the protection system to be able to work, you need to supply TurboView with a password. Click on the main FILE menu and pick "Paranoia Options" and then click "Password Setup". You will have a chance to enter a password. You have to enter it twice so that you verify that that is the password that you really want. Once you set (saved) the password, THAT'S IT. You CAN NEVER change the password. If you remove TurboView and re-install it to trick it into giving it a different password, then you will NOT be able to access the protected files that had been protected using the older password. IE: What ever password was used to protect a file is the SAME PASSWORD that MUST be used when un-protecting it. SO, that is why we just don't allow you to change the password once you entered one.

HINTS:

After you have protected some files, when you try to access them, you will be asked for a password. Make SURE you enter the SAME password that you used when saving your password setup. If you enter a WRONG password more than 3 times, you won't be able to access those files until you re-run TurboView. They will appear as a solid white/black image :) If you exit TurboView and then get back into it, you can again try to give the proper password to gain access to those files.

NOTE: All files that are protected get renamed so that "!_" is put at the begining of the filenames. For example:   MYPIC001.JPG would become   !_MYPIC001.JPG. We do this for 2 reasons. First, because it makes it easier to know which files have been protected. It also allows you to quickly find ALL protected files using the "START/FIND" option in Windows. Just put in "!_ *.*" in the filename to search for field. And All protected files will show up :)

WHAT ABOUT DRAGGING PROTECTED FILES:

There may be times when you are viewing some protected file and you would like to send it to a buddy or maybe copy it to a new folder etc.. Basically, you just drag the file to your email program so that the file appears as an attachment to the email you are composing. Or you could drag it to an explorer window that is showing the folder you want to copy the protected file to. In either case, since these are NOT TurboView programs, they will NOT be able to access the files :( HOWEVER, TurboView is smart enough to know this and it will ask if you want to make the protected file usable by other applications that you are dragging to. Just click YES. At this point TurboView makes a COPY of the file in the temp folder. This temp file IS a USABLE version of the protected file. It is this temp file that then gets copied(dragged) to your other application. If you select NO, then the file that is sent to the other program of course will be un-usable :)

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

There are some speed issues with protected files. Since these files need to be decrypted before you can access them (view / play), you need to be aware that this decryption process takes some time. For example: To decrypt a single JPG file that maybe about 100K would take about 1/20th of a second. You might say, whoopty do, that's real fast and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Well, that's pretty much true. HOWEVER, let's say you have a 3 MEG movie file, this would take about 1 to 2 seconds to decrpyt before playing. And of course a super large movie file would take a more seconds. This is just for your information in case you were wondering. IN case you were wondering about files that get protected & renamed in relationship to the Notes DataBase and your Albums, you might think there would be a problem. Well, actually all that is taken into consideration. When the file gets renamed, it looks at the database entry and updates it and it searches thru all Albums and updates every Album that references the unprotected filename and changes it to the new filename. So basically, no muss / no fuss :)
